At this point the main engines have actually been temporarily throttled down a bit to preserve the structural integrity of the ship. Once they are higher and the atmosphere thins enough, the shuttle can safely ramp back up to full power–at about sixty-seconds after lift-off.</image:caption></image:image></url>

Only a short while earlier this orbiter, with its crew of four astronauts, had been tearing through the Earth&#039;s atmosphere, maneuvering to brake its speed as it reached temperatures of nearly 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit (1,649 degrees Celsius) along its leading edge surfaces. Now traveling a little over 200 mph the shuttle deploys its drag chute and opens the drag flaps on its vertical fin, to create aerodynamic drag that will help slow it down.</image:caption></image:image></url>

The journey of approximately two miles normally takes a little under two hours; but on the occasion of this being the last of the Space Shuttle missions, the orbiter made an unusual stop as the centerpiece at a special employee gather near the end of the route.&amp;#xA;-- In a Norman Rockwell like scene that would be right at home in any middle-American home-town parade, a small band of NASA workers escort their last shuttle home to roost with the same pride as national heroes walking down any main street USA might have, waving at the crowds of onlookers, mindful of history happening.</image:caption></image:image></url>

The churning river water left a thick coating of brown mud on everything it touched, and in some cases even burst out store fronts. &amp;#xA;&amp;#xA;City contractors and volunteers worked fast to keep up with merchants as they gutted stores of damaged merchandise and destroyed furnishings. I was shooting individual specimens against white paper under an open-shade sky, off to one side of the filming location; but was fascinated by the dramatic visual of this tupperware tub full of smelly, dead insects piled on top of each other that had been assembled for the task. Plus, I have a history of photographing found dead things. I decided to photograph the tub flat-on against the white paper, overexposing the translucent white of the container walls against the darker bugs. The natural complexity of the outdoor location lighting added a richness to the reflections on the shiny bugs that I wouldn’t have gotten had I taken this back to a studio environment. Sometimes opportunity and art come together in lucky ways.</image:caption></image:image></url>

He has been balancing rocks since 1994, working mostly along the shores of San Francisco Bay in Northern California. It is here that Bill developed his skills as a balanced rock sculptor, working with the piles of erosion control stones (called riprap) conveniently accessible along many public shores, building temporary edifices as onlookers watched in amazement and delight.</image:caption></image:image></url>
