Wearable Art

by George Murphy on May 16, 2012

It seems I am always photographing Justin Oliphant on his birthday behind some kind of persona facilitating eyewear. This latest Photo Splash post is an image we made outside of McNear’s Saloon in Petaluma, a few nights ago. That’s the neon marquee of the Mystic Theater that you see reflecting off of the highly polished Bausch and Lomb lenses of these very cool high-tech, retro glasses. While it wasn’t actually his birthday yet when I shot this, I am posting it today (which is) in tribute. As a side note: I’m currently tracking down the name of the artist who made these glasses and will post an update when I have that information.

Justin Oliphant gets his steampunk on as he sports a pair of fine art spectacles under the multi-colored neon of Petaluma’s Mystic Theater.

Technical Notes:
This shot is also a fine example of how handy it is to work with the new Canon EOS 5D Mark III in low light situations. Using available lighting at ISO 1600, I shot hand-held at 1/50th sec. at ƒ/4.0 using a focal length of 80mm. The lens was a Canon EF 24-105mm ƒ/4L lens and the image stabilization definitely allowed me to stay sharp on the eyeglass details. I did have a rim light from a wirelessly triggered Canon Speedlight 580EX II, but ended up framing out the contribution from that source.

If you think that I’m holding a lot of depth-of-field for an ƒ/4.o aperture, you’d be right. I bracketed my focus on the eyeglasses and merged the two shots to retain detail in both lenses.

A QUICK BLOG UPDATE:
So many things and so little time!!  Despite the best of intentions, the sound of crickets and neglect have set the mood on this blog for too many weeks now as my focus has been pulled to other areas…but new things are-a-coming, so hang tight and don’t delete The FirstHand Journal blog from your favorite links list yet.

Many thanks for your loyalty and interest,

Lunar Eclipse Gallery

by George Murphy December 10, 2011 Photo Splash

This morning’s total lunar eclipse favored those of us on the west coast with a nice view, so I thought I’d share a few of the shots I made in those chilly pre-dawn hours that the eclipse was visible for us here in California. Very grateful for a nice down jacket to ward off the [...]

Exploring A New Photographic Dialect

by George Murphy October 23, 2011 Journal Essays

Things may have been a little quite on the Firsthand Journal of late, but it hasn’t been for a lack of developments on the photography front. Apologies for the extended silence. In reality I’ve been diving headlong into exciting new visual territory that I just haven’t been ready to share until now. The three images [...]

July was an intense and exhausting month as I hit the road with a car packed to the gills with photographic equipment and traveled to Florida’s “Space Coast” to witness and document first-hand the final mission in NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. I would be providing an insider look at this historic event for the Press [...]

I’ve been out at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida since last week, covering the launch and upcoming landing of the last Space Shuttle, Atlantis. Remembering Another NASA Mission Ending

by George Murphy June 7, 2011 Journal Essays

With this last Space Shuttle launch coming up fast, I thought it appropriate to look back at another earlier mission ending that carried many of the same question about the future of manned space travel that haunt this last flight of Atlantis. Six years before the very first Shuttle flight, and that amazing sense of [...]
